PROTECT HAGERMAN

STOP THE JUPITER ENERGY BATTERY STORAGE SYSTEM

Features

🚨IMPORTANT🚨 The new draft of the Gooding County energy ordinance is now available for public viewing. You can read it at this link.

THE NEXT (AND FINAL) MEETING TO DISCUSS THE ORDINANCE IS ON JANUARY 21st at 5:30 PM AT THE GOODING COUNTY COURTHOUSE (624 Main Street, Gooding).

Click here to read a full synopsis of what took place at the December 10th 2024 meeting.

Features

A company called Jupiter Energy is currently leasing a piece of land just outside of Hagerman, Idaho--along Route 30, near Justice Grade--to explore building
a
Battery Energy Storage System (B.E.S.S) on the site.

Battery Energy Storage Systems are fraught with SERIOUS RISKS to the local area.

Features

THE RISKS INCLUDE:

FIRES AND EXPLOSIONS

  • B.E.S.S. systems are prone to overheating and combustion, causing rapidly-spreading fires called THERMAL RUNAWAYS.
  • These fires are accompanied by extremely high temperatures (up to 1832 degrees F), toxic fumes, and the risk of explosions.
  • In such cases, surrounding residents need to be evacuated on an emergency basis.
  • Structural damage to surrounding homes can also occur due to the extreme heat.
Features

DANGER TO FIREFIGHTERS

  • Local fire brigades require specialized equipment and training in order to be prepared for the extremely challenging aspects of this type of emergency. STANDARD FIRE CONTAIMENT MEASURES WILL NOT WORK.

  • Southern Idaho’s firefighters are already fully extended in the prevention of wildfires.

  • Most of them are volunteers, their lives are NOT expendable, and their budgets are constrained.

Features

NOXIOUS GASES

  • Toxic gases such as Lithium hexa-fluoro-phosphate, hydrogen cyanide, hydrogen chloride, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide can be released by the storage cells.

  • These are asphyxiating gases that are heavier than air and remain at ground level where they damage human health, soil and water - to say nothing of the severe risk this represents for our firefighters.

  • These gases can be released for SEVERAL HOURS PRIOR to the start of a fire.

In light of the many serious dangers associated with BESS facilities, as well as the disruption to the landscape and the ugly eyesore they present, properties within several miles of battery storage facilities lose a tremendous amount of value.

MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD! Gooding County Planning and Zoning is currently deliberating over the language for an ordinance that will govern the construction of B.E.S.S. facilities. We are urging them to BAN these facilities outright. Further meetings will be scheduled for the public to attend and voice their concerns.

We also need you to contact local authorities by phone and email and ask them to take action, including the following people:

EVERY PHONE CALL AND EMAIL IS VITALLY IMPORTANT!!!

Feel free to refer the people you contact to this website (protecthagerman.com) so that they can educate themselves further about B.E.S.S. Right now, the two most important things you can do are to CONTACT AUTHORITIES and SHOW UP AT THE FINAL PLANNING AND ZONING MEETING on JANUARY 21st 2025 to voice your opposition to this project.

As of now, no special use permit has been submitted to build the B.E.S.S--YET. If the language in the completed ordinance allows conditions for building a B.E.S.S., it will be MUCH harder to prevent this from happening.

Features

LANGUAGE MUST BE ADDED TO THE GOODING COUNTY PLANNING AND ZONING ORDINANCE TO BAN B.E.S.S CONSTRUCTION OUTRIGHT.

IF THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN, AND A PERMIT FOR CONDITIONAL USE IS SUBMITTED, IT WILL LIKELY BE TOO LATE TO STOP THIS PROJECT FROM MOVING FORWARD.

THAT IS WHY YOUR ATTENDANCE AT THE DECEMBER 10TH MEETING IS SO CRUCIAL.
